Paying It Forward
From the age of three when Lu Chi Fa became an orphan, all he could rely on to survive was
his own courage and preseverance. These characteristics have also been the foundation for the
successes he has achieved in later life.
However, it was the infrequent and "small fragments of kindness" he received during
his early life that shaped his principles and priorities. So now, Lu Chi Fa "pays it
forward" by donating proceeds from Double Luck to local libraries and to his
scholarship funds at Porterville College. These donations provide immediate
benefits and will help keep the programs alive for many years to come.
Porterville College Scholarships:
The Gordon Lu/Osher Initiative Scholarship
was established at Porterville College for
students in good standing with identified financial need. This endowed scholarship recognizes
the inspiration that Gordon has offered PC students for nearly a decade of appearances to talk
about his life and book, Double Luck: Memoirs of a Chinese Orphan.
Gordon Lu/Osher Initiative Scholarship and The Gordon Lu Annual Scholarhip
Porterville College also awards a second scholarship in Gordon’s name,
The Gordon Lu Annual Scholarship,
when contributions of at least $500 have accumulated
during an academic year. Those wishing to make a tax-deductible contribution
for the Annual Scholarship should make their check out to PC Foundation and drop it off
at The Coffee Pot Restaurant, which Gordon has owned and operated for the past 20 years.
The restaurant is located at 1001 Front St., Morro Bay, CA 93442-4009. For additional
information, call Milt Carrigan at 805-458-8816.
While growing up, Lu Chi Fa had few opportunities for any type of formal, or even informal,
education. However, he understands and appreciates the importance of education and the
benefits of reading. So, to ensure that as many he is an advocate and generous contributor
for book purchasing and reading programs at his local libraries.
Hopefully, everyone who benefits from his contributions will pay it forward when they can.
